At GOAL Foundation UK, we believe in the power of culture to bring communities together. That is why, as part of our HAF Easter Holiday Club, we are introducing children in Tower Hamlets to one of Bangladesh’s most beloved traditional rural games — Dariyabandha.
What is Dariyabandha?
Dariyabandha is a traditional team game that has been played in rural Bangladesh for generations. The name comes from the Bengali words meaning “to hold the boundary” — and that is exactly what the game is about. Two teams compete against each other, with one team defending a series of lines while the other team tries to cross them and return safely.
The game requires no equipment, no expensive kit and no large facility. All you need is open space, energy and teamwork — making it perfectly suited for community settings and school holiday programmes.
How is it Played?
The playing area is divided into a grid of lines. One team acts as the defenders, each player guarding a line and trying to tag the attackers as they cross. The attacking team must cross as many lines as possible and return to the starting point without being touched.
The game is fast-paced, physical and full of excitement. It demands quick thinking, agility, communication and trust between teammates — skills that are just as valuable on the playground as they are in everyday life.
Why Are We Bringing Dariyabandha to Tower Hamlets?
London is home to one of the largest Bangladeshi communities outside of Bangladesh. Yet many younger generations growing up in the UK have little connection to the games, traditions and culture that their parents and grandparents grew up with.
By introducing Dariyabandha through our HAF programme, we aim to:
- help children connect with their Bangladeshi heritage in a fun and active way
- promote physical activity and teamwork during the school holidays
- celebrate the diversity and cultural richness of our community
- create shared experiences between children of different backgrounds
- keep a centuries-old tradition alive for future generations
More Than Just a Game
Dariyabandha is more than a game — it is a piece of living heritage. When children play it, they are not just exercising their bodies. They are taking part in something that connects them to a place, a history and a community far larger than themselves.
We are proud to be bringing this tradition to the Osmani Centre this Easter, and we look forward to seeing children discover it for the very first time — and perhaps fall in love with it, just as generations before them have.
The HAF Easter Holiday Club runs from 30 March to 10 April 2026 at the Osmani Centre, 58 Underwood Road, London E1 5AW, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Open to children from Reception to Year 11.
Register your child now — places are limited.
